As the saying goes, ‘Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a queen and dinner like a pauper’. Why’s that you ask? Because breakfast sets you up for the rest of the day. Our naturopaths explain why exactly it’s important to eat your breakfast.

After eating a substantial breakfast, you’re more likely to eat well for the rest of the day. Plus, it’s a good start after waking up on the wrong side of the bed. Here are five important reasons why eating a decent breakfast is important for weight loss.

1. Missing breakfast can actually make us fat.

Not eating can make us fat… Come again? Well, your body is in a fasting state in the morning because you haven’t eaten for a long time. If you don’t eat until lunchtime, your body will go into starvation mode as if it’s in a famine situation. The metabolism will slow right down to conserve energy and store fat.  For this reason, eating breakfast is actually very important for long term weight loss.

2. Eating breakfast speeds up your metabolism.

We produce hunger hormones according to meal schedule and circadian rhythms. Think of breakfast as an alarm clock for your metabolism. It breaks the fast so your metabolism isn't forced to slow down to conserve energy. When you have fasted all night, your blood sugar levels will be low. If you skip breakfast your blood sugar will drop even lower and as a result, you become hungry and have less energy. This sets you up to impulsively eat the wrong foods, have extra servings or bigger portions at lunch or dinner. One of the most effective ways to lose weight is to control hunger.

3. The best way to control hunger is to feel full.

Foods that help us control hunger are not only protein and lower glycemic index carbohydrates, but they’re also high in fibre. Eating a high fibre breakfast is great for its slow burning effect. Try to include flaxseed, oats, bran, and psyllium to belp burn more fat, lower cholesterol levels and maintain healthy blood sugar levels. Protein should be incorporated into your breakfast. Eggs, yoghurt, low fat cheese such as cottage cheese, nuts and seeds and protein powders are all great sources of protein.

4. Eating breakfast gives you energy.

When you wake in the morning your blood sugar levels are already low. Low blood sugar levels cause us to feel tired, irritable and less able to function - let alone think about going for a run or to the gym.

5. A substantial breakfast will set you up for the rest of the day.

It has been proven that people who skip breakfast tend to compensate by consuming more calories later on in the day. However, eating the wrong food will make you feel hungry sooner. Junk food will raise your blood sugar levels to an unhealthy level, which then cause you to crash a few hours later. Foods to avoid are sugary cereals, fruit on its own, white toast, jams and of course fatty foods which although have a low glycemic index will cause weight gain from too many calories.
