Tart Montmorency Cherry

Tart Montmorency cherries have been reported to contain high levels of phytochemicals including melatonin, a molecule critical in regulating the sleep-wake cycle in humans.

The data suggests that consumption of a tart cherry juice concentrate provides an increase in exogenous melatonin that is beneficial in improving sleep duration and quality in healthy men and women and can be of benefit in managing disturbed sleep.

Tart Cherry has also been shown clinically to increase tryptophan availability. Cherry juice procyanidin B-2 inhibited IDO, increased tryptophan availability by reducing inflammation which decreased the kynurenine-to-tryptophan ratio, inhibiting tryptophan breakdown, which is believed to be partially responsible for improvement in insomnia.

Tart Cherry (Prunus cerasus) contains antioxidant polyphenols such as quercetin, chlorogenic acid, and anthocyanins, which possess varied health-promoting properties. Antioxidants found in tart cherries can therefore also help fight free radicals in the body.
